Birding in Central Chile: From the Ocean to the Andes Mountains

In four days, we pass from the Pacific Ocean to the Andes Mountain Range. Enjoy navigation in the waters of the Humboldt Current to observe seabirds such as albatrosses, petrels, shearwaters and other coastal seabirds. We will continue our journey through coastal wetlands to observe waterfowl like ducks, swans, coots and grebes. We arrive at La Campana National Park, where we will follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin to observe diurnal and nocturnal raptors, as well as some endemic birds like White-throated Tapaculo, Moustached Turca, and Chilean Mockingbird. The last day, we will enjoy the scenery offered by the Andes mountain range, road to El Yeso Reservoir to watch birds like the Andean Condor, Torrent Duck, Diademed-Sandpiper Plover, Andean goose, seedsnipes and other endemic species such as the Crag Chilia.

Birding and whale-watching at Chañaral Marine Reserve.

Based in the fishermen's village "Chañaral de Aceituno" we will navigate to Chañaral Island, the biggest Humboldt penguin colony in the world. During the navigation we will observe coastal marine birds such as cormorants, diving-petrels, terns and gulls as well as a resident colony of bottlenose dolphins. Between December and March, we will have close encounters with the largest animals in the world: blue, fin and humpback whales. This place offers a unique combination of these magnificent and massive mammals with the fragility and grace of marine birds, mostly endemic to the Humboldt Current System.
